Florida Keys Snorkeling Locations

The Florida Keys chain of islands is home to some of the most spectacular species of marine life in North America, because of its extensive protected reef system.  If you are looking for an adventure to remember, take a snorkeling excursion in the keys – and don’t forget your underwater camera!

Some of the best Keys snorkeling can be found at Bahia Honda State Park, and you don’t even need a boat! A variety of sea life is viewable just a few hundred feet from the shore.  The snorkeling is especially good for beginners because it is shallow, at only 4-6 feet. Just use caution when snorkeling near the channel, as the current can be quite strong. You may see sponges, small coral heads, tropical fish and Queen Conchs on the Atlantic side of the island, along with spiny lobster and stone crabs that may venture out of the rocky holes.

Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary is an awesome spot for snorkeling in the Lower Keys. This sanctuary was named for the HMS Looe, which ran aground there in 1744 and is now a place where a variety of coral and marine life exists under special protection. Part of this reef slopes to more than 100 feet, providing a spectacular opportunity to view species such as manta rays and turtles.

There are snorkeling tours throughout the keys. Several are in the Key Largo area, where you can take a morning, afternoon or sunset tour – instructions and snorkeling equipment included!  Some of the tours in this area will take you to the reefs of John Pennekamp Park and the National Marine Sanctuary. If you have never been snorkeling before, or are new to snorkeling in the keys, it is a great idea to take one of these tours so that the experts can guide you on how to safely enjoy the precious reefs of the Florida Keys.
