Florida Keys Fishing Guides
When it comes to fishing guides, you will find the best of the best in the
Even if you are an experienced angler you can benefit by hiring a guide, especially if you are fishing for a different type of fish than you normally would. If you primarily fish off-shore and would like to try fishing the reef for yellow tail snapper as a change of pace, then you might want to take along a guide the first time out in order to learn the best techniques for success.
Florida has “Captains” and “Guides” – Captains are licensed by the US Coast Guard after passing classes, spending the required amount of time on the water, completing first aid training, etc.
There are many guides available throughout the Florida Keys, whether you are interested in reef fishing, off-shore fishing or fishing the flats. Guides are available with their own boats and tackle, or they can come to your boat.
Most guides will fish either full or half day, and some will take you out for a few hours. Fees range from about $300 and up for a half-day and about $450 on up, for a full day, for two anglers. And don't forget to tip generously if your guide has given you a successful trip! Rates usually include fishing license, tackle, and a cooler with ice. If you are taking your boat, or you are renting a boat; you will need to purchase your own fishing license.
Things you may want to bring along with you include lunch, plenty of water or non-alcoholic beverages, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, a small towel. If you want to bring your own rod or tackle, check with your guide first to be sure that they will have enough room on the boat.
Many keys fishing guides have their own website, so do some investigating online before making your phone calls. Reservations are recommended in advance of your planned trip, as many of the best guides are booked sometimes months in advance – especially during the busy season!
