Florida Keys Boat Rentals

There are many places to rent a boat in the Florida Keys, so if you prefer to be your own captain, you’ll have all types and sizes at your disposal.

You can rent boats of all sizes and terms from hourly, half or full day, weekly and even monthly. Rentals come equipped with life vests, area charts, safety equipment and more depending on the establishment. Some of the smaller boats however, will not have the much in the way of electronics, so you would need some charts to find your way. Some facilities will have equipment available to rent such as coolers, fishing rods, bait and tackle. Some boat rental agencies offer free delivery of the boat to your home or hotel.

Every place has different requirements. Most will require a deposit of some sort, whether it is leaving your car keys and your driver’s license, or a $250 (more or less) deposit on your credit card.

As far as your experience level, the rules vary depending on the rental agent and the size or type of boat to be rented. For smaller boats, little to no experience may be required, or a rental agent may take a little ride along with you, just to be sure you can control the craft.

The potential cons of renting a boat in the keys? First, not knowing territory, or being familiar with boat can lead to damaged props from running a ground. Not being able to handle currents and having docking difficulties. Problems with handling boat traffic during busy times. But again, this depends on the boater’s experience and the size of the boat rented.

If you decide to rent a boat, it would be a good idea to try and fish the same approximate area throughout your stay. Trying to learn a new area everyday, while at the same time trying to avoid getting caught on a shallow flat can become frustrating. Don’t waste your precious vacation time trying to learn too much in a short period of time. Enjoy yourself!

If you are hesitant to rent because you are unfamiliar with the Keys, check to see if the boat rental agencies in the area you will be visiting work with any area fishing captains (many have working relationships with well-known captains). Book a trip with one for a full for half day and learn the territory with a pro – it will be worth the investment.
