Boat Shoes

If you are wearing flip-flops on the boat when fishing, you are an accident waiting to happen. Those wearing casual flip-flops have often paid the price either slipping or falling on a wet boat deck, or by having a hook (or gaff) pierce their big toe!

Deck shoes or topsiders, have been around for years and have been worn by both boaters and non-boaters for as casual or even semi-dress shoes. They are great on and off the boat, being made from a kind of leather that is resistant to water and are very durable.

Times have changed and the types of boat shoes available have changed as well. Many of the styles available today provide comfort as well as protection. Boat shoes today are lighter in weight, have better cushioning and are made from durable, yet breathable materials that promote quick drying.

Boaters in the Florida Keys can also get the sandal-style shoes they like, with the protection they need. There are brands of closed-toe boat sandals available today that come in a variety of styles and have superior traction on wet or dry surfaces. Some are fastened with Velcro straps, or bungee type toggles, while other use traditional laces. Certain brands offer lift-out insoles, which are machine washable – a good way to keep odors down. Many of the newer models include an antimicrobial treatment to help defend against odor and fungus.

Many of the brands you are familiar with such as L.L. Bean, Columbia, Rockport, Sperry, Teva and Timberland have their own version of boat shoe or boat sandal. Shop around, there is a wide price range when it comes to boating shoes and you may find a great pair for $30 or you could spend $150 or more. Keep in mind that you can get extended life out of some shoes if they have removable insoles that can be washed, or replaced if needed.

Whether you are looking for women’s boat shoes or men’s boat shoes, you are sure to find the style and price range you want in some of the new shoes available today.
